Event Details

Hostage negotiators apply a secret code of emotional intelligence to highly charged situations. What would happen if those same ideas were applicable to all interactions?

The FBI developed psychological profiling based on the idea that crime was just human behavior and that homicide is only an intense form of behavior. Therefore, those lessons would apply to all behavior.

The same is true for hostage negotiation. Hostage taking is an intense form of negotiation and it’s governed by the same set of principles as all negotiation.

What principles? Emotional intelligence. As it turns out, neuroscience backed emotional intelligence. These strategies have been field tested under the most extreme conditions and across all cultures.

Chris Voss is the author of the Wall Street Journal Bestselling business negotiation book “Never Split The Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It”.

Chris is a business negotiation specialist and was the FBI’s Lead International Kidnapping Negotiator, negotiating all over the world. Chris is a 24-year veteran of the FBI and has taught business negotiation at Harvard Law School, and in the MBA programs at Georgetown University and The University of Southern California. “Never Split The Difference” was named a top business book of 2016 by Business Insider and has been named on Forbes.com as one of The Seven Best Negotiation Books Ever Written.

Chris is currently the CEO of The Black Swan Group, a business negotiation advisory firm that teaches the competitive edge of hostage negotiation for application in the business world. “Never Split The Difference” is being translated into 19 languages and 26 countries.

Event Details

How, then, can you tell when you’re dealing with a genuine expert?

Real expertise must pass three tests.

First, it must lead to performance that is consistently superior to that of the expert’s peers.

Second, real expertise produces concrete results. Brain surgeons, for example, not only must be skillful with their scalpels but also must have successful outcomes with their patients. A chess player must be able to win matches in tournaments.

Finally, true expertise can be replicated and measured in the real world.

Before practice, opportunity, and luck can combine to create expertise, the would-be expert needs to demythologize the achievement of top-level performance, because the notion that genius is born, not made, is deeply ingrained.

That’s all a lot to digest but it what makes an expert and METal is filled with them and this week’s METal, four experts will teach us their trade. Get your notepads ready because call is in session this weekend!

In the quickly changing music industry, CDs are fading out, making way for streaming and paid subscriptions and a renewed interest in vinyls.

CDs are about to join eight-tracks, cassette tapes and most vinyl on the scrap heap of music platforms.

The sale of CDs started declining in 2000 when illegal online music downloading took place through Napster. While CDs sales are declining, online streaming and paid subscriptions of music have improved industry profits.

U.S. music industry revenues started to decline in 2000 mostly because of Napster. Revenues peaked in 1999 at $15 billion.

Now, industry revenues have increased about 17 percent since 2016, driven by paid music subscriptions.

In 2017, industry revenues were about $8.7 billion. Paid subscriptions like Spotify and Apple Music increased more than 50 percent from 2016 to 2017.

According to Billboard.com, Best Buy plans to pull CDs from its shelves this summer, and Target officials want to switch to scan-based trading for CDs and DVDs, where the chain would pay for the media after it’s sold to customers.

At this METal the Former Chairman of EMI Music & Former Managing Director of Warner Music Group Mark Poston will discuss how legacy labels are experiencing a slow death of physical music and how the new era of the artist is emerging.

War, climate change, natural disasters, and our own destructive behavior have endangered some of Earth’s most precious treasures, from historical sites and monuments to unique natural habitats.

This profusely illustrated volume pays tribute to some of the wonders that remain at risk, including the archeological remains of Afghanistan’s Bamiyan Valley, devastated by the Taliban; Alaska’s Denali National Park, harmed by tourism and uncontrolled development; Tanzania’s Telous Game Reserve, victimized by poachers; and the Kiribati Archipelago in Oceania, which could vanish entirely due to rising sea levels.

At this week’s METal guest speaker Tom Patterson will share that with a troubling present that offers a message of hope for the future, and calls on us all to protect our natural environment and cultural heritage.

Tom is the Unisys Chief Trust Officer and Vice President of the Global Security business.

He brings more than 30 years of leading-edge security experience, expertise, and innovation helping commercial and public sector clients tackle some of their most complex security challenges.

14apr9:00 am12:30 pmEvent OverMedicine's Surgical Strikewith Dr. Kenneth Kim

more

Event Details

Surgery, just like military warfare has progressed over time. We often hear of “surgical precision” when it comes to strategic military operation.

Yet, surgery often still relies on general anesthesia (knocking out a patient) to accomplish a surgical mission. Elite military special forces can covertly enter a city and rescue a hostage without destroying the city and the civilians. Any forceful entry, whether a military campaign or surgery can have negative consequences.

In the military, it is the increased cost and negative political drift and resentment from native and foreign civilians. In surgery, it can lead to increased medical cost and life-threatening blood clot formation.

In addition, significant postoperative pain occurs which requires opioid prescription use. Postoperative surgical use of an opioid for pain control is one of the leading cause of the opioid epidemic in America.

With the use of modern technology, we can specifically and effectively deliver compounded (specially mixed) local anesthetic to knock out local pain receptors. Therefore, surgery can be performed while the patient is awake. Having the patients awake during surgery keeps them at their normal physiology.

In addition, surgery is also performed in a natural moist, fluid bathed environment. This prevents tissue desiccation (drying), internal tissue burn, and significantly less blood loss. Thus, the patient is “wireless” and is at their natural “organic” state.

In surgical strike 2.0, the surgeon precisely executes its mission with the least amount of collateral damage to the patients. This will help decrease the surgical and post-surgical health care cost, and the opioid epidemic while increasing patient safety.

Dr. Kenneth Kim is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon practicing in Los Angeles. Dr. Kim was nominated for the Rhodes Scholarship and selected as a University Medal finalist at UC Berkeley. Dr. Kim graduated from Yale University School of Medicine and was a recipient of the Dean’s Award and Department of Surgery Research Award. Dr. Kim was inducted as a fellow at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

He completed his plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at Northwestern University. Dr. Kim was awarded the AO Craniomaxillofacial Research and Development Fellowship at the AO Institute in Switzerland. He is an assistant clinical professor at UCLA School of Medicine and a partner of Dream Medical Group in Seoul, South Korea.

Dr. Kim has published numerous peer-reviewed journals from basic science to clinical aesthetic surgery. He is currently a chairman of the Upper Blepharoplasty and Visual Field Loss Guideline Task Force of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He also serves as a member of the Quality and Performance Measurement Committee and Patient Safety Subcommittee.

At this week’s METal we will discuss what the new dream is and how achievable it is for the country.

07apr9:00 am12:30 pmEvent OverReligion vs Spiritualitywith the Director of Man from Earth Richard Schenkman

more

Event Details

A growing number of people are embracing spirituality and rejecting religion.

But to divorce the two entails a misconception of what the word religion truly means and can lead to a shallow spirituality of cheap grace that shirks commitment.

Religion and spirituality are two related yet distinct terms associated with faith. Religion denotes “a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, usually involving devotional and ritual observances and a moral code.”

In contrast, spirituality can be defined as “the quality of being spiritual”.

Based on these definitions, the major difference between religion and spirituality is one of believing versus being.

Religion’s focus is the content of one’s belief and the outworking of that belief; spirituality’s focus is the process of becoming more attuned to unworldly affairs. It’s possible to be religious without being spiritual and spiritual without being religious.

The difference between religion and spirituality is an important question and one that will only continue to be asked more and more.

At this week’s METal, we will talk about the the blurred lines between religion and spirituality with the Director of Man from Earth Richard Schenkman.

Richard Schenkman writes, directs & produces feature films & TV show. First was The Pompatus of Love, a collaboration with Jon Cryer & Adam Oliensis.

He then directed the action/drama October 22 for Millennium, and Went to Coney Island on a Mission from God…, another collaboration with Cryer. 2007 saw the release of the cult phenomenon Jerome Bixby’s The Man From Earth, which is ranked on IMDB as a top sci-fi film of all time.
