For more than 50 years, we’ve been hearing about the promise of artificial intelligence and intelligent machines, but most of the big success stories to date – the IBM Watsons of the world – have been the result of massive efforts by universities and corporate R&D labs rather than by emerging start-ups.

That could change soon, as artificial intelligence shows signs of becoming the next big trend for tech start-ups from around the globe.

Facebook’s new artificial intelligence lab, and quickly landed one of the top minds in “deep learning” in the nation.

Google already had one of the smartest minds in the AI business – Ray Kurzweil – on its books, and has been making all kinds of lateral moves in fields like robotics that could benefit from AI.

AI, particularly its applications in health, finance and the automotive sector, attracted US$12 billion of investment from venture capitalists globally last year, double the volume in 2016.

China accounted for five of the world’s 10 biggest venture capital investments in the fourth quarter, the data released on Thursday shows. And more of the companies receiving the financing are electing to plough that money into AI development.

At this week’s METal we will dive deep into what’s happening in the AI space with several top AI companies sharing their discoveries.

Event Details

The repressive force steadily illegalized. LSD in 1967, MDMA in 1985.

There was a golden period of empathogenic psychotherapy in the early to mid-80s when MDMA (E, Adam, Molly) was erroneously and illegally put into Schedule I by the DEA, engendering the flood that ensued of 10s of millions or users and 100s of millions of experiences. In that time, I and a loose network of psychotherapists found and cultivated a revolutionary approach to psychotherapy.

The 50-minute hour blew open to the 5-8 hour session. Fabulous work with couples ensued. Opening the heart to oneself and the others around, generating compassion and understanding, working with personal and cultural trauma, freeing from obsessions and depressions rapidly and definitively without being in a constant Pharma bath, these were the essences.

At this week’s METal Dr. Philip Wolfson will discuss this fragile period of legalization, spurred on by the mass movement for marijuana decriminalization. Limited research with psilocybin and MDMA has accelerated moving to the possibility of MD prescription sometime in 2021 or 2022.

Dr. Philip Wolfson is a Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy, or KAP, we are filling out an organizational structure that includes: The Ketamine Research Foundation—a non-profit; The Ketamine Training Center that provides uniquely 4-day experiential sessions to practitioners so that they both learn the psychotherapy and experience the power of the medicine itself; The Center for Transformational Psychotherapy and its Associates group–that is developing nuclei of KAP practitioners throughout the US and looking to become International.

Event Details

Why are some transactions or “deals,” as they are called, most likely to happen or not happen? There are a number of factors that come into play, and those of us in the industry call them deal makers and deal breakers.

Every deal needs to be judged on its own merits. However, there is often a pattern that develops during the merger and acquisition (M&A) process.

The difference between a successful transaction and one that falls apart is a clear understanding of the relevant facts. There’s one other thing that can make every deal happen and that’s your your value measured by your social status, or the total amount of social influence you have over the other members of your community.

Status is fundamentally about how others perceive and interact with you (and what they allow you to get away with). And high status people get away with a lot. Society is geared to make their life easy. What if you’re low status? Almost everything is difficult at the bottom of the food chain.

Is there a clear pattern of behavior that would cause people to view you as high status, and treat you differently … and better then they ever have in the past? According to Oren Klaff, there is a formula for this. He will give you a window in the hidden (and often super subtle) way that status works for you and against you in every personal life, and certainly in every business deal.

Oren Klaff is one of the world’s leading experts on sales, raising capital and negotiation, having pitched and closed over $500 million of investor capital in recent years. His first book, Pitch Anything, is required reading throughout Silicon Valley, Wall Street and the Fortune 2000, and has been translated into over 10 languages, with over 1,000,000 copies in circulation worldwide.

Today, Oren teaches leaders and organizations his hard-won real world methods. Additionally, Oren has written for Harvard Business Review, INC, Advertising Age, Entrepreneur and hundreds of periodicals, podcasts and blogs. Oren is an investment partner in a $200 million private equity investment fund.

He lives in Southern California with his wife and son, and in his spare time is a motorcycle enthusiast.
