Event Details

The production company model has been around for over 100 years.  From the early studio days of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and Warner Brothers, to newer iterations like ITV, Annapurna Films, and Freemantle, the production company model was based on one very large idea: Creating & owning IP.  The main concept behind generating revenue for a production company was to sell a film or series to multiple distribution platforms.  For example, selling a show to NBC in the United States, Channel 4 in the UK, and Seven Networks in Australia, would lead to multiple paths of revenue for the same piece of IP, and those contracts typically had a time restriction on them, meaning you got back your show at some point and could sell it yet again.  Companies were able to keep these international rights, DVD/Bluray rights, and streaming platforms rights platforms because there was no such thing as a worldwide distribution network.   Now Netflix, Amazon, and other OTT platforms have changed this, and require worldwide rights in perpetuity, meaning all the other potential revenue streams for production companies and studios are being removed.  Justin will explore what that means to any producers and writers trying to pitch shows and create a brand of their own, and speak to how the new model can be to our benefit.
Justin Holt is television and film veteran of almost two decades, and has recently left Netflix as head of unscripted post production.   In his time at Netflix, he helped budget and launch close to 200 series, including Emmy winner Queer Eye and Emmy nominees My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman and Bill Nye Saves the World.  His oversight included international productions spanning 18 countries, and helped build the current team that will launch an average of 100 series per year.  Prior to Netflix, Justin has built and run many successful post production vendors, often serving as a consultant to producers to ensure success.  To date, Justin has produced over 8000 hours of content for almost every domestic distributor and quite a few international companies.

As Founder/Consultant of InHouse Productions, Justin and his team are consulting producers on how to navigate this new world, and how ensuring the best show management can lead to creative and financial success.   The team will be your “inhouse production” as well, just ask them how!
